HISTORY - Founder David Garvin established Camping World in 1966, responding to requests by a growing contingent of campers and RVers visiting his father’s amusement park in Bowling Green. After securing a $5,000 loan, Garvin opened a small store in the park offering an assortment of RV parts and accessories. The catalyst for the operation was sparked by Garvin’s foresight to amass a mailing list, leading to the first mail-order catalog and the birth of Camping World. Camping World was acquired by the Affinity Group, Inc., of Ventura, California, in April, 1997, a membership management and publishing company. PRODUCT - Camping World offers three convenient venues for purchasing product. Retail Outlets: Camping World’s retail stores are stocked with over 8,000 RV-specific products from 4,000 suppliers. Two major initiatives began in late 2002. Camping World performed major renovations to its existing stores while strategically expanding into new markets through the Gold Medal RV Dealer Program. Internet: Catering to on-line RVers, Camping World’s web site at campingworld.com registers over 250,000 visits per month. Features on the award-winning site include user-friendly navigating, secured credit card transactions, interactive forums and links to related sites. Camping World’s web site was named one of the Top 50 sites for 2003 by Internet Retailer. Catalog: Camping World’s mail-order business is still the cornerstone for the retailer. The catalog format was recently redesigned and reorganized to be more consumer-friendly and reflect Camping World’s expanded retail focus on the outdoor marketplace.
